CHAPTER 8

Downtown Winchester isn’t quite as cozy as downtown Glimmerspell, but with the throngs of people, the band blaring from a makeshift stage, and the scent of delicious savory foods from a dozen different restaurants, it’s definitely making me feel as if I want to hang out for a bit.

The candlelight street party has closed down an entire thoroughfare of five city blocks, and true to Morgan’s word there are rows and rows of booths that showcase all the fine dining and fast-food options that are available in town. It’s not snowing tonight, but there is plenty of the white stuff lining the ground and pushed off to the sides. Twinkle lights are strung from lamppost to lamppost, giving this place a charming and magical appeal, but the fact the streets are overrun with boozed up frat boys and coeds makes me remember why I prefer a quiet night in compared to the party scene.

“Corn dogs!” Teddy cries out as she does her best to steer us in that direction, but Iona pulls her back.

“No to meat on a stick,” Iona says as she points across the way. “They’ve got Chinese food, five bucks for two main dishes and three sides.”

“Five bucks?” Teddy is suddenly enchanted by the lure of the East. “Now that’s something you can’t beat with a stick.”

“I’ll pass,” Morgan says. “I see funnel cake across the way and next to that there’s a cookie bar for dogs.”

Acorn gives a few hearty barks as if to say he wholeheartedly approves.

And I approve of that orange sweater and matching boots that Morgan has stuffed him into.

They take off while the rest of us load up on orange chicken and beef with broccoli before scarfing it down as if our lives depended on it.

“Look at that?” Teddy says as she lands an arm over Iona’s shoulder and mine. “Your shared love of all things moo goo gai pan has bonded you for life.”

“Don’t get sappy on me,” Iona says, shrugging Teddy’s arm off of her. “You know I’m allergic to feelings.”

Teddy’s mouth falls open as she looks to our right. “Are you allergic to donuts rolled in breakfast cereal?”

And just like that, the three of us make our next move. If there’s one thing I can’t resist, it’s a good cruller. But a cruller encrusted with Fruity Pebbles? We’re talking a brand-new addiction here.

As if the sugar fix wasn’t enough, we spot a booth specializing in baked potatoes stuffed with bacon and ice cream.

“Who says I don’t love a good challenge?” I ask through a mouthful of delicious frozen goodness with a touch of bacon on the side.

Iona nods. “And I had no idea my stomach could double as a bottomless pit, but I’m glad it chose tonight to prove it’s possible.”

Teddy grunts, “Gird yourself, girls. This belly busting party is just getting started.”

Iona lifts a brow. “What about the booze and boys?”

Teddy hoists her spoon in the air. “Honey, that’s one party that never ends.”

“I’m not a big drinker, but I’m all about tall, dark, and brooding boys.
